Receding Gum Are Signs Of Trouble

Dentists of the world are in a strange profession since their ultimate goal is to make everyone so healthy they are out of a job.  Oral health is taught to children by parents, teachers, and on television shows.

Despite the training we all receive, oral health is not perfect yet, and the first sign of trouble is often receding gum.

Discovering receding gum can be somewhat surprising but doesn’t cause the alarm of blood on the outside of your body.  The sight of blood oozing or gushing from a cut or scrape is disturbing at least but when it is in your mouth the effect is lessened.  The indirect evidence of noticing your white floss is a tad pink or red now, or your toothbrush is a little pink after brushing, doesn’t have the drama associated with it.  Receding gum can cause some drama if you actually end up spitting out red blood.

That raises the drama stakes in the game and should cause you some alarm.  If you have enough blood flowing from your gums to spit out and taste the salty nature of it, you may have a very serious gum disease problem.  If you have receding gum, what should you do about it?  Panic and rush to the dentist?  Probably not at first but if the bleeding continues for more than a few days, it is probably a good idea to check it out with the professionals.  The likely cause is just irritated gums that have swelled a little and are leaking a small amount of blood when pressed or pulled.  The most common problem associated with receding gum is gingivitis.

Gingivitis happens if you don’t clean your teeth and gums well or for some other reason the bacteria in your mouth have a growing party between your teeth and gums.  The bacteria multiply rapidly and soon start to irritate the gums causing the swelling and often redness in color.  The receding gum associated with gingivitis will normally show up when flossing or brushing your teeth.  The motion of the floss or toothbrush against the gums will cause minor bleeding.  The bleeding should stop fairly quickly after you stop the action, and not reoccur until the next time.

With good cleaning over the next several days, the condition should disappear.  Infection can be another source of receding gum and is more serious than gingivitis.

The gums can get infections from several different viruses or agents.  The herpes virus can spread to the mouth and infect the gums leading to swelling and bleeding.

Little sores will form, and the areas around the teeth and gums will be very sore and red.  Modern drugs can cause receding gum if the dosage and usage are not correct.  The use of anticoagulants is more common when people age to prevent blood clots  The blood thinning action of the drugs is essential for preventing lumps, but if the dosage is a little off, the gums may start bleeding significantly as a result.  Consult your doctor if this occurs frequently.
